IT and business analyst are put in the difficult shoes of presenting IT solutions in terms of project management metrics. Scope, time and resources are of great importance to project sponsor but not to end users. Shown below is the design triangle can be used to increase communication effectiveness and project sustainability. Project scope and effort need to be translated into following metrics:
- Business objectives- How many business objectives are met with the proposed design
- Effort – How much effort is required to maintain the application under current requirements
- Benefit – How much benefit is realized through implementation of the application
- Degree of flexibility – How rigid or nimble application is to change
Due to the interdependency, if an analyst can provide 3 of the metrics then the fourth one can be easily derived.
Comparing various solutions in terms of this triangle provide a visual representation for easy assessment. End user now understand what they are getting into and can chose the right solution based on the resources available and state of business objectives.
